Gillian Pokalo combines photographic imagery with painting and printmaking techniques, in order to create implied narrative landscapes. Her photographs, which she develops as photo silkscreens and photo etching plates, are inspired by the places humans leave behind. Through the repetition of the printed image, Gillian’s photographs of abandoned architecture raise questions about past inhabitants as well as the nature of human interactions with our built world. Many of her recent works incorporate imagery from Iceland, following an artist residency.
Her home and studio are in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. She regularly shows her work in and around Philadelphia. She recently had a solo show at Pennswood Gallery in Yardley, as well as several artist markets, such as Clover Market, InLiquid’s “Art for the Cash Poor”, and Main Line Art Center’s “Holiday Market”. Her work is on the set of ABC’s “Modern Family”, and her work is in several private and public collections. When she isn’t in the studio, she is the art teacher at Plymouth Meeting Friends School, where she teaches kindergarten through 6th grade. She also teaches adult printmaking classes at Main Line Art Center in Haverford, PA.
