Stephanie Bursese’s solo exhibition Inverse Sampler presents a new body of work featuring intricately hand-embroidered textile works that give form to the experience of compulsion and memory, and question assumptions about the idea of “a copy.” Inspired by the layered history of the needlework sampler, and utilizing Bursese’s own photographs as source material, each of her multivalent compositions employs competing perspectives and scales to expand the meticulous fidelity of a photograph.
Stephanie Bursese (b.1980, Schenectady, New York; lives and works in Philadelphia, PA) uses photography, sculpture, textiles, and site-specific installation to investigate perspective, memory, and trust. In 2013 she self-published her first book of photographs Razor Thin Rock Hard and released her second book, Belt and Brace, in 2015. Bursese has been a member of Vox Populi Gallery for 11 years.
