At Washington Printmakers Gallery, nine mini solo exhibitions in Variations collectively explore the range of possibilities for creation with ink printed on paper. Tillman participates with solar plate etchings from her two new series of Humanography, etched both from her drawings on vellum and digital collages.
Variation exists not only through the media used to create the print matrix, but also within each edition with the use of different inks and papers. In this show, the black and white variations of Tillman’s etchings are presented as two parallel worlds coexisting through dialogue between absence and presence. “Eidola” are depicted as humans stripped from the environment they created for themselves, exiled in their own vacuum. As a reflection, “The Glorious City” has been left to exist as a stage of absences, barely carrying the shape of the lost creator.
Variations opened on March 31 st and is on view through April 30 th at the Washington Printmakers Gallery, 1675 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington DC.
