How do you see your neighborhood?

Join us in the Oar Pub at Park Towne Place Museum District Residences on Saturday, January 20, from 2 - 4 pm for a Mental Mapping drawing event. All skill levels are welcome to come and socialize, enjoy some drinks and light snacks, and explore how you see your neighborhood.

This event is facilitated by Richard King, Park Towne Place’s newest Artist in Residence. Using memory as a reference, participants will draw the locations in the neighborhood that resonate with them and the paths that they take to get there. Richard will use the mental maps created by participants in this event to help guide the work he produces throughout the course of his residency.

Inspired by Kevin Lynch’s book, The Image of the City, participants will use mental mapping to recognize the fluidity of how we understand and engage our neighborhoods and cities. By making their own mental maps, participants in this event will better understand the personal nodes, pathways, edges and landmarks of their neighborhoods and the places they inhabit.

As a working architect, Richard King is interested in how people, buildings, and space interact and connect us. In Philadelphia, Richard’s studio art practice focuses on abstract drawing, painting, and sculpture, exploring form, space, geometry, and light. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Temple University and a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. Richard is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Drexel University’s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design.

RSVPs are required, and we suggest a $5 donation per ticket. All proceeds will be donated to InLiquid, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to creating opportunities and exposure for visual artists – all while serving as a free, online, public hub that showcases Philadelphia’s vast visual arts culture.
