I believe in making works that are self explanatory and legible to a mass audience across many cultures and ethnicities. My motivation for these pieces comes from a spirit of generosity and a desire to delight and surprise with works that are in unexpected and disregarded places, such as the sculptural portraits series that I made to fill potholes, broken sidewalks and ceramic tiles in Berlin, or park benches that have been turned into large figures that embrace the sitter. Earlier works I made were large trees and caves with illuminated and upholstered interiors that were nestled in forgotten corners of art institutions. I have also made miniature topographical maps of the Grand Canyon that were fitted in the cracks of sidewalks, or left in the drawers of offices.

This latest piece for CEVA is inspired by my simple  desire to hug friends when I meet them, because the world is in a state of anxiety and hugs feel good. The performance and interactive part of the piece will be completed by a participant giving the viewer a hug when they enter the room.

Paul Burn is a sculptor, painter & site-specific installation artist, puppet maker, passionate arts educator based in Berlin, Germany.
