Presented by InLiquid, a solo exhibition of works by Susan Wallack will be on display at Engagement Studios from November 6 – December 31.
Wallack’s work — collage, assemblage, and mixed media paintings — draw upon her early experiences at museums and galleries and the joy that accompanied them.
With some exceptions, the pieces are neither representational nor wholly abstract; there may be a narrative but it is broken into fragments, the subjects recognizable but not exactly real. Backgrounds are often neutral, suspending the image in a visual limbo, discouraging fixed meaning, encouraging the viewer’s participation in the process.
In this sense, the work is often incomplete, purposely so, propelled forward, as is, into an unfathomable future.
Artist Statement
Born in New York City, raised by kindly docents at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, every new gallery was an adventure, an education, powerfully stimulating and profoundly peaceful.
The work I do now — collage, assemblage, and mixed media paintings — draw upon these early experiences and the joy that accompanied them.
