Danny Simmons… Studio Time is a collection of works by Danny Simmons made during the 2020 pandemic. Simmons’ paintings and works on paper offer intricate mazes taking the viewer into dimensions of his inner world. These never before shown works chart Simmons’ practice throughout the stay-at-home orders where he has had an opportunity to throw himself fully into his studio practice and create beauty and hope during these dark times.
Danny Simmons, Jr., is an American abstract painter from Queens, NY, who once coined his particular style of painting as “neo-African Abstract Expressionism.” Simmons’ visual artworks are held in public collections including The Smithsonian, the United Nations, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Museum, Chase Manhattan Bank, Deutsche Bank, Schomburg Center for Black Culture, along with numerous private collections. Simmons is co-founder along with his siblings, Russell and Joseph Simmons and president of the Rush Arts Gallery. He is also founder and VP of the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation. Simmons was recently featured in a Black Art in America article, “Danny Simmons: A Critical Path” by Howard McCalebb.
Danny Simmons holds a Bachelor’s degree in social work from New York University, a Masters in public finance from Long Island University, and is the recipient of an honorary PhD from Long Island University. He continues to thrive at his ‘home gallery’ in Philadelphia, PA.
