"Catherine Jansen doesn’t employ a camera, preferring instead to use a Xerox machine."

March 9 through April 22, 1984
Timed to coincide with the historical exhibition Pictorial Photography in Philadelphia: The Pennsylvania Academy’s Salons, 1898-1901, the Morris Gallery’s show of Contemporary Philadelphia Photographers presents the work of nine artists working today. While the diversity of contemporary approaches and techniques is well represented the selection is but a small sample of the excellent work done by the large and active photographic community in Philadelphia.
Catherine Jansen doesn’t employ a camera, preferring instead to use a Xerox machine. Paul Cava doesn’t consider himself a photographer at all, although his collages all include historical photographic images. David Lebe “draws” in front of the camera with a penlight. Lebe, Judith Steinhauser, and Alida Fish augment their prints with the old-fashioned technique of handcoloring. Before shooting, Fish first constructs her setups of vintage book, illustrations and real insects; and Laurence Salzmann escorts his models to a street corner to pose over a steam vent. While Bill Bamberger mines his subjects in Durham County, North Carolina, William Williams finds his people at posh urban parties. Issues of human sexuality are investigated in the work of Peter Sasgen, David Lebe, Paul Cava, and Laurence Salzmann.
