Artist's Biography
Matthew Borgen is a native of Akron, Ohio. He was awarded a BFA in drawing from the University of Akron, and an MFA in painting from the University of Minnesota. Since moving to Philadelphia in 2003 he has presented his work in regional venues including The Woodmere Art Museum; The Fleisher Art Memorial (Wind Challenge); The Abington Art Center; The Barbara Crawford Gallery at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy; InLiquid Gallery; and the Center for Contemporary Art, Bedminster, New Jersey.
Nationally he has been included in exhibitions at The Urban Institute for Contemporary Art, Grand Rapids, Michigan; The 621 Gallery, Tallahassee, Florida; The Arlington Center for the Arts, Arlington, Massachusetts; and H Gallery, Ventura California.
Borgen has served as Exhibitions Coordinator for Arcadia University since 2012. His curatorial projects include exhibitions of preparatory sketches by muralist David Guinn, a survey of the career of mid 20th-century artist John Hathaway, and a presentation of proofs and drawings related to the lithographs of Benton Spruance. Most recently, Borgen organized solo exhibitions of the works of photographer Tamsen Wojtanowski and printmaker Jennifer Manzella.
Artist's Statement
Currently in my practice I borrow heavily from comic books produced during the mid-twentieth century, not only as a source of imagery, but also for the variety of compositional strategies the genre’s unique narrative structure suggests. In the completed works I often infuse these elements with themes, compositions, or references borrowed from across the western art historical canon.
These combinations and manipulations are intended to highlight moments where the original images prove incapable of supporting the ideas or cultural status with which they have been weighted, either by the artists themselves, or by other individuals or institutions.
All imagery inevitably fails to fully depict empirical reality. However, in the case of the content with which I am currently engaged, the disconnect stems from the long prioritization of the European patriarchal experience. The creation and support of such imagery can take place deliberately, for the purpose of increasing the political or financial influence of a particular person or group — or unintentionally, as the result of an unrecognized position of cultural privilege.
As the application of more decentralized and inclusive models of examining and interpreting culture, science, gender, and history increases, the descriptive limitations, social deficiencies, and problematic moments inherent in these materials become more apparent to an ever-increasing population.
My use of this kind of imagery is intended as an acknowledgment and confrontation of these failures. Through appropriation and satire I am seeking to mine a new value from these sources in the hope of contributing in a positive way to a conversation about the broader re-examination of long-held, and seemingly intractable, social ideas and narratives.
