I’m an artist working mostly with inks on various papers. These papers include text wove, rice and certain Japanese printmaking and handmade papers. I prefer Japanese inks because of their colors, they are muted and transmit a quietness I enjoy.
A great deal of my work focuses on repetition of line to bind myself to the creative process. And I use inks with dip pen and or brush. The series of lines I make are akin to writing a letter with an introductory paragraph, a body of thoughts in the middle and a concluding paragraph. The lines being like thoughts following each other.
Cheryl Levin, born Philadelphia, PA has exhibited in numerous group shows across the country and is included in many private collections. Her most recent exhibitions include two solos at the DaVinci Art Alliance, Philadelphia and Ninth Street Women and Their Legacy at the Somerville Manning Gallery, Wilmington, DE where she showed with original works by Elaine DeKooning, Lee Krasner, Grace Hartigan, Helen Frankenthaler, and Joan Mitchell. She was a founding member of The High Wire Artist CO-OP, Philadelphia and was represented for over 20 years by The Patrick Owen Gallery, Philadelphia. Currently, Levin is a member of the National Association of Women Artists, NYC and Florida Chapters, InLiquid and DVAA Gallery in Philadelphia. Her work can be seen at The Somerville Manning Gallery on a regular basis and in group shows. Levin was awarded a residency at the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson Vermont and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Amherst, Virginia and is a recipient of the Adolph & Ester Gottlieb Foundation Arts Grant. Her recent work seeks to create a minimalist approach to art-making that speaks to the fragility of life.
