CALL FOR TEACHING ARTISTS: Exhibition and Collaborative Project Fellowship

Fellowship takes place during one week in the Summer of 2025

OVERVIEWThe Community Arts Center Summer Fellow Program seeks to create a deep connection between teaching artists and the summer programming at the CAC.

Fellows engage with the Arts Center community in two ways:

EXHIBITION: Fellows participate in a solo or small group exhibition in the Duke Gallery, the 3,000 square foot main gallery at the CAC. The exhibition runs June 14th - July 11th with a reception on Thursday, June 26th, 6-8pm. A gallery talk for art camp families will be scheduled during the time the Fellow is on site for Summer Spree art camp.

COLLABORATIVE PROJECT: Fellows facilitate a special project with children ages 4-11 who are enrolled in the Community Arts Center’s Summer Spree art camp. The theme of the camp this year is Full Circle. Each Fellow’s project is a single session in duration. Sessions are 1 week long and occur between June 23 and July 11. Fellows will work with students between 9 am and 12 noon each weekday to create a collaborative project that may be site specific. Fellows meet with multiple groups of 6-12 students each, grouped by age. Each group typically meets with the Fellow two times during the week for approximately 45 minutes each time. In total, Fellows typically work with 60-80 students during the course of the week.

QUALIFICATIONS / ELIGIBILITY

The program welcomes energetic, focused artists working in traditional and nontraditional mediums. Professional artists at all points in their careers are welcome to apply. Current graduate students are eligible, but applications will not be accepted from undergraduate students. Two dimensional work and wall hung sculpture is preferred for the exhibition, as the gallery is often used for events. However, exhibition proposals that include a limited number of free standing sculptural pieces and/or smaller sculptures that would be presented on pedestals will be considered. Selection is based on several primary factors: strength and individuality of the work, creativity and practicality of the project proposal, and demonstration of ability to engage and work with children. Fellows receive a stipend of $1000. Materials costs for collaborative projects are covered by the Arts Center within a limited budget.

The Arts Center is not able to provide food or transportation during the residency period. In some cases lodging is provided for artists coming from out of town. Assistance in hanging the exhibition is provided.

PROPOSAL

Interested artists should submit a proposal that includes the following:

1-Artist Statement/Bio and resume or CV including education, exhibition history and teaching experience

2-Description of the work you plan to exhibit in the gallery

3-Description of the specific project that you plan for the summer camp

4-Contact info for 2 professional references

5-Five images of recent work that is characteristic of the work you intend to show and three images of past student or collaborative work from projects you have taught/facilitated. Images should be at least 300 dpi.6-Image list with the title, description, dimensions, materials used and year produced for each piece.

Application materials may be emailed to pauldownie@communityartscenter.org or mailed to the Community Arts Center. If mailing, please include digital images on a CD or flash drive. Please do not include folders, binders, photographic prints, original art works, tear sheets, newspaper articles, etc.

The Arts Center will retain all application materials and will not return any materials submitted. Note: Summer camp projects should be directly related to the theme Full Circle. Priority will be given to proposals that make a strong connection between the exhibition and the summer camp project. This may take many forms. For instance, a part of the exhibition may change or evolve over the time the fellows are here working in the summer. A portion of the work created collaboratively with the campers may be included in the exhibition. All fellows must pass FBI clearance as well as state child abuse and criminal record clearances one month prior to program start date.
