Artist Biography

Alyse C. Bernstein is a multi-disciplined visual artist and educator who is based in Philadelphia and raised in New York City and South Florida. Her formal art training began at a young age, studying oil paining in the studio of a local artist. Alyse is an alumna of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, graduating with a major in printmaking and minor in sculpture and she received numerous awards for her work in lithography, which she taught for many years at the Fleisher Art Memorial.

Alyse's work shows a deep affection for materials, featuring nature and natural phenomena. She loves to collect field guides on various subjects and locations and has traveled extensively. Alyse is the recipient of several grants, which enabled her to experience the art and culture of many countries including Japan, Israel, and Mexico. She is a rabid embroiderer and creates quilts and pillows from her needle work, often repurposing scraps of thread, tired bed linens, and clothes. Alyse has taught extensively, exhibited prints, sculpture and textiles throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, and has been featured in numbers articles. She is a member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid, and an embroidery and print collective and operates a print shop at 1241 Carpenter Street Studios.
