Artist Statement

‍

As a young child, I noticed that when I started a drawing and then looked at it and waited, something happened. The drawing told me what it wanted me to do next. The fact that this kind of interchange, this call and response, actually existed was mysterious and compelling but felt real and somehow familiar.

The conversation deepens and expands as I pay attention. The struggle is to be able to distinguish my own habitual moves and mechanical patterns from something that comes as if from outside - something that really takes me by surprise, something new. My desire is to make the unknown known. To quote Ernst Steiner, "The Artist is Pontiff connecting the present with the beyond ... a midwife for what wants to be revealed to the world."

Artist Biography

‍

Robert Zurer was born in New York City in 1948. He grew up in Greenwich Village in the 50s and 60s. His mother was a part-time writer and actress. In 1957, his father built and ran the Renata Theater on Bleecker Street. His playground was Washington Square Park. His friends were the sons and daughters of parents active in the creative community which existed in Greenwich Village at the time. He started drawing in early childhood. He and his father played a game where his father scribbled some lines on paper and asked him to make a drawing from them. This kind of automatic drawing has continued to this day as a source for his paintings.
